NEW Vegan Buying Guide

The number of vegans in the UK has reached a record 600,000, now equating to 1.6% of the UK population. What’s more an unprecedented 400,000 people pledged to go vegan for the month of January 2020 and research for The Vegan Society has shown that the Covid-19 pandemic actually had a positive effect on the popularity of vegan and flexitarian diets. 1 in 5 UK consumers cut down on their meat consumption and 15% reduced their dairy and egg consumption during the initial lockdown. With evidence linking increased BMI with poor Covid-19 outcomes, the pandemic caused many people to reassess their lifestyles and choose a vegan or flexitarian diet as a way to pay more attention to their diet, nutrition and the provenance of their food. All of this lending credence to predictions that within the next 25 years a quarter of the population could be vegan and half will identify as flexitarian.

Suppliers and manufacturers are responding to this evolving consumer trend with the launch of a remarkable number of new vegan products, helping to significantly improve the price, choice and quality of vegan products now on the market. In fact, The Vegan Society has seen a 49% year on year increase in the number of products registering for vegan certification, amounting to 41,262 products certified in 2019. Many existing brands that are naturally or accidentally vegan are also now stating this clearly on packaging, which has in turn helped to make the difficult transition of switching to a vegan diet easier and more accessible.

To keep you up-to-date with the wide choice of products now available within this fast evolving category, we’ve produced a new updated version of our Vegan Buying Guide. Working in collaboration with The Vegan Society, our guide brings you: an in-depth insight into why people are choosing to go vegan, an overview of the nutritional considerations of a vegan diet and how to buy vegan as well as a guide to how you can get involved with their latest national marketing campaigns including Veganuary.
